Return-to-office, Remote & Hybrid work
When it comes to remote work in the tech sector, “a trend is beginning to take shape in Europe.”
European companies had experimented with remote work even prior to the pandemic. Remote work was allowed by some employers, but “only for a small number of workers and highly dependent on the type of job involved.” Beyond that, workers who had “rare skills” might be permitted to work remotely on a part-time basis. It was not the norm.
The pandemic changed everything, of course, and like the United States, Europe is grappling with whether those changes will be permanent.
The “big experiment” forced by the pandemic has pushed IT business leaders to try to “find the right balance for their companies.”
The answer, leaders say, is almost definitely some form of hybrid work, an acknowledgement that many workers put a premium on flexibility and remote work, but that “some of the best decisions and insights come from hallway and cafeteria discussions, meeting new people and impromptu team meetings."
What most companies in the tech sector seem to be “settling on” is a “hybrid arrangement, and often that means people can work at home up to two days a week.”
